INFO CENTER

All About Air Conditioner Repair and Replacement: Key Details, Tips, and Benefits for a Worry-Free Home

How quickly can you respond if my furnace breaks down at night or on a weekend?
We strive to respond as fast as possible when you have an HVAC emergency. In many cases, we can dispatch a technician to your home within a couple of hours, even on weekends. Our team understands that a broken Furnace is urgent - we won't leave you waiting without heat longer than necessary.
Why is my furnace blowing cold air?
A furnace blowing cold air is usually a sign that the burners are not firing even though the blower is running. One simple cause can be the thermostat’s fan setting – if the fan is set to “On” continuously, the furnace might sometimes blow unheated air when the burners cycle off. In that case, switching the fan to “Auto” will ensure it only blows when heat is being produced. Otherwise, common causes include ignition or pilot issues. If the furnace’s pilot light is out or the electronic igniter is malfunctioning, the burners won’t light, and you’ll feel cool air from the vents. It could also be a safety control issue (for instance, if the furnace overheated due to a dirty filter, a limit switch might be keeping the burners off). Try resetting the furnace once, and if the problem persists – especially if you’re only getting cold air – have a professional check it out. Our technicians can quickly pinpoint whether it’s a minor issue like a sensor or something that needs repair so your furnace can blow warm air again.
What furnace & heat Pump brands can you install or service?
We work with all major brands. Our team has experience installing and repairing systems from top manufacturers like Carrier, Lennox, Trane, Goodman, Rheem, and many others. Rest assured, we can service virtually any brand of central AC or ductless mini-split that you have or prefer.
Will PV try to repair my system first instead of pushing a replacement?
Yes, absolutely. Our philosophy is to do what's truly best for the customer, not our bottom line. If your system can be safely and reliably repaired, we're going to recommend repairing it. We're not in the business of selling you equipment you don't need. Of course, if your system is completely dead or the repair would cost almost as much as a new unit, we'll discuss replacement - but we'll do so only after explaining why and making sure you agree it's the best path.
How much does heating repair usually cost?
The cost can vary depending on the problem and the parts required. After we diagnose your system, we'll let you know exactly what the repair will cost before we proceed. We pride ourselves on fair and transparent pricing — no surprise costs. We never recommend unnecessary work, and if we find multiple options (like repair vs. replace), we'll discuss them with you so you can make an informed decision.
Are your technicians certified and experienced?
Absolutely. Our HVAC technicians are NATE-certified professionals with extensive training and experience. Each technician undergoes over 125 hours of training every year to stay up-to-date on the latest heating & cooling technology. You can trust that the person servicing your system knows what they're doing and will treat you and your home with respect.
Should I repair or replace my heating & cooling system?
It depends on the unit's age and the cost of the repairs. If your system is older (around 10-15 years or more) and facing a major repair, investing in a new system can be more cost-effective in the long run. Frequent breakdowns or very high energy bills are also signs that replacement might be wiser. For newer systems with minor issues, a professional repair is usually the best choice — we'll always help you weigh the options honestly.
Do you offer financing for heating and cooling repairs or installations?
We do. We know a new system or major repair can be an investment, so we have multiple financing options to help make it manageable. With approved credit, you can secure financing that allows you to buy now and pay over time. This way, you can get the comfort you need without straining your budget.
Can you repair ductless mini-split air conditioners?
Yes, we repair ductless mini-split AC systems as well. Our technicians are trained to handle all types of cooling systems, including ductless mini-splits. Whether your mini-split isn’t cooling properly, has a leak, or won’t turn on, we can diagnose it and get it working again. We have experience with all major mini-split brands, so you can count on us to fix the issue and restore comfort.
Why are some rooms in my house hotter or colder than others?
Inconsistent temperatures from room to room usually indicate an airflow or design issue with your HVAC system. It could be caused by improper ductwork, poor system sizing, or an aging layout that isn’t balancing the air properly. We can diagnose the cause of these hot and cold spots and recommend solutions — sometimes adjusting ducts or adding zoning — to help every room stay comfortable.
If my heating just needs a small fix, will you still come out?
Absolutely. No call is too small – we want to help you be comfortable. Even if it turns out to be something simple like a thermostat setting, a tripped breaker, or a dirty filter, we’re happy to come out and get it sorted. Homeowners often aren’t sure how serious an issue is, and that’s okay. We’d rather you call us for a little problem than risk bigger issues down the line. Our technician will either fix the minor issue on the spot or give your system a clean bill of health if everything looks good.
Some rooms in my house aren’t heating properly. Can you fix airflow or duct issues?
Yes, uneven heating & cooling is something we deal with often. Our team can investigate the cause - it might be as simple as adjusting dampers or as involved as sealing leaky ductwork or redesigning parts of the system. We take a holistic look at your home's airflow to pinpoint the issue. In some cases, hot and cold spots can even be due to insulation or home layout issues beyond the system itself. Whatever the cause, we'll find a way to balance your system so every room gets comfortable.
Do you stand behind your work with any guarantees or warranties?
Yes, we do. We take pride in our work, and your satisfaction is our top priority. For repairs, we offer a warranty on the parts we replace and our labor — if something isn’t fixed right, we’ll make it right. For new system installations, you’ll receive a strong warranty (in most cases, 10 years parts and labor). We want you to have peace of mind when you choose PV.
What makes PV Heating, Cooling & Plumbing different from other HVAC companies?
We’re a local, family-owned company founded by three brothers right here in Atlanta, and we do things differently. Since starting in 2008, we’ve focused on doing the job the right way without cutting corners or upselling unnecessary services. Our team is highly trained and customer-focused, and it shows – we have thousands of 5-star reviews and a 99% customer recommendation rate. With PV, you get honest advice, quality workmanship, and a team that truly cares about your home’s comfort.
Are your technicians certified and background-checked?
Yes. We carefully background-check and screen our team members because we know you’re trusting us in your home. When a PV technician arrives, you can be confident you’re getting a skilled professional who respects you and your property.
How often should I have my furnace serviced?
We recommend a professional air conditioning tune-up once a year (and another visit in the spring for your air conditioner). Having your Furnace or Heat Pump inspected and serviced annually — typically in the fall — is the best way to keep it running efficiently and reliably. Regular yearly maintenance lowers your energy costs, helps prevent breakdowns during the hot summer months, and can prolong the life of your Furnace. It also keeps your manufacturer's warranty intact on newer systems.
Do you use subcontractors, or are all technicians in-house?
We only use our own in-house technicians. We do not hire subcontractors to perform work for us. When you schedule with PV, the person who shows up will be a trained PV employee who adheres to our high standards. This ensures consistent quality and accountability on every job.
My HVAC system is new — do I still need maintenance?
Yes, even new systems benefit from regular maintenance. A new system will run great out of the box, but annual tune-ups keep it running at peak efficiency and help prevent early issues from developing. Plus, many manufacturer warranties require routine maintenance to remain valid. By servicing your new unit each year, you protect that coverage and ensure your central air stays in great shape long after the first year.
Can I get a free estimate for a new heating & cooling system installation?
Yes, we provide free estimates for new installations or system replacements. If you're considering upgrading your system, just contact us to schedule an in-home consultation. We'll evaluate your home's needs, answer your questions, and then give you a no-obligation quote for the recommended solution. We're also happy to provide a free second opinion if you already have a quote from another company.
What are your business hours? Are you available on weekends?
Our regular business hours are Monday through Sunday, 7:00 AM to 8:30 PM. We understand HVAC problems can happen anytime, so we’re available even on Saturdays and Sundays. You can reach us by phone any day of the week during those hours for air conditioning needs, and you can also schedule your appointment online 24/7. If you have an emergency, call right away — we’ll most likely be able to see you that day.
Do you offer HVAC design consulting for new systems?
Yes. We have an HVAC design consulting team dedicated to ensuring your system is perfectly tailored to your home's needs. Whether you're building an addition or want to resolve long-term comfort issues, our experts can perform load calculations, design proper ductwork, and recommend the right equipment. This consulting ensures your system provides optimal comfort and efficiency for the long haul.
What does a furnace or heating system tune-up include?
Our tune-up service is very thorough. During a furnace tune-up, our technicians perform checks and tests such as: inspecting and cleaning the burners and blower motor, testing the pilot light and gas pressure, checking the heat exchanger for cracks, inspecting the flue venting, and performing a combustion analysis to make sure your furnace is operating safely (no carbon monoxide leaks). We’ll also replace filters and ensure all components are in good condition. For heat pump systems, we likewise perform comprehensive maintenance: flushing the condensate drain line, testing key electrical components (compressor, capacitors, fan motors, safety controls), verifying the refrigerant charge and looking for leaks, measuring airflow and temperature rise, and even checking static pressure in your ducts. By the end of our tune-up, your heating system will be clean, calibrated, and ready to keep you comfortable.
My furnace isn’t turning on – what should I do?
If your furnace won’t run at all, there are a few things you can check before calling for service. First, verify your thermostat settings: make sure it’s set to “Heat” (not off or cool) and the set temperature is above the current room temperature. Sometimes the thermostat may also need new batteries, so check that as well. Next, check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker or the furnace’s power switch (usually near the unit) to ensure the furnace has power. If you have a gas furnace, confirm that the gas supply valve is open and, if your model has a pilot light, see that the pilot is lit. Also, a very dirty air filter can cause some furnaces to shut off for safety, so it’s worth inspecting your filter and replacing it if it’s clogged. After these steps, if the furnace still won’t kick on, it’s time to call in the pros. Our technician will be able to diagnose the issue (whether it’s an ignition system problem, a faulty thermostat, or something else) and get your heat working again
Why is my furnace making loud or strange noises?
Unusual noises from your furnace are a clear indicator that something may be wrong. A healthy furnace typically runs with a low hum or whoosh of air. If you start hearing banging, rattling, thumping, or squealing sounds, it’s time to investigate. These noises often point to a mechanical problem – for example, a bang could be a delayed ignition or expanding ductwork, a rattle might mean a loose panel or component, and a squeal could indicate a slipping blower belt or motor bearing issue. In any case, it’s best to shut off the system and have it inspected. Running a noisy furnace can lead to further damage. Our team can inspect and repair the source of the noise to prevent a minor issue from becoming a major repair. Sometimes a quick adjustment or part replacement will get your furnace operating quietly again.
How can I tell if I have a furnace or a heat pump heating system?
Great question – many homeowners aren’t sure. The quickest way is to consider your fuel source and what the system does year-round. A gas furnace will burn natural gas (or propane) to heat the home. So if you get a gas bill and see usage in winter, or if you can locate a gas line going into your heating unit, you likely have a furnace. You’ll also typically have an outdoor AC unit that only runs in summer for cooling. In contrast, a heat pump is an electric system that provides both cooling and heating. It looks like an air conditioner outside but will run during the winter months as well, not just summer. In heating mode, a heat pump works like an AC in reverse – it extracts heat from outdoor air and transfers it inside. One telltale sign is if you don’t have a gas furnace but your outdoor unit kicks on during cold weather, that’s a heat pump. Another clue: your thermostat might have an “Emergency Heat” or “Aux Heat” setting – that’s commonly found on heat pump systems for very cold days. In summary, if you have a flame-based heater with a flue (exhaust pipe) and gas supply, it’s a furnace. If your heating is entirely electric and integrated with your AC unit, it’s likely a heat pump. Some homes (dual fuel systems) actually have both a heat pump and a furnace, but that’s less common. If you’re still unsure, we’d be happy to take a look and let you know exactly what system you have and how it works.
What is a Manual J load calculation and why is it important?
A Manual J load calculation is a fundamental step in proper HVAC design – it’s the process of calculating how much heating and cooling your home actually needs. This calculation looks at factors like your home’s square footage, insulation levels, number of windows and their orientation, ceiling heights, air leakage, and more. Using all that data, Manual J determines the amount of heat your house loses in winter (and gains in summer), measured in BTUs. The result tells us what capacity furnace or heat pump is the “right size” for your home PVHVAC.COM . It’s extremely important because everything hinges on getting that size correct. If you oversize a furnace (too many BTUs), it will short-cycle, waste energy, and cause temperature swings; if you undersize it, the house won’t stay warm on the coldest days. Unfortunately, many contractors skip detailed load calculations and just use rule-of-thumb guesses, which can lead to those oversizing/undersizing issues. We always perform a Manual J calculation before recommending new equipment. With the proper load calc, you get a system that is just right – it will run in longer, efficient cycles, keep you comfortable in all conditions, and avoid problems like short cycling or insufficient heating. In summary, Manual J is how we ensure you’re getting the exact heating capacity you need, no more and no less. It’s a science-based approach to HVAC sizing and one of the reasons our installations perform so well.
